Frequently Asked Questions

What is State?

State is the discussion platform that empowers citizens to drive change. We turn informed, nuanced and depolarised discussions into collective intelligence that strengthens democracy.

We are not a partisan platform—we are technologists and democracy enthusiasts who build tools for discussions and engagements between groups that serve democracy. At State, politicians are ready to hear your voices; community tools help you build stronger bonds and communication among members; and citizens are empowered because discussions drive change.

Why do we build State Discussion?

We built State because public discussion deserves better.

State is designed to help people understand public issues, contribute their perspectives and find common ground. We bring relevant background information into discussions and use formats that help people explore different views and see where they agree.

The aim is to make disagreement more informed and constructive, while helping communities build a clearer picture of what matters to them.

My local councillor or MP is on State. How can I make my voice count?

Raising the issue at State Discussion is your best shot.

Start with a specific issue and check which representative is responsible for it. Explain what is happening, how it affects you or your community, and what action you would like them to take. Relevant facts and examples make your contribution more useful.

Invite others affected by the issue to share their experiences, and stay open to different perspectives. A constructive discussion can help show both the strength of concern and where there is agreement. Follow up with a clear question about the next step.

What's the Oracle?

The Oracle guides you through the political system and offers you the tools to achieve the change you want. It maps the political structure of the United Kingdom so you have the right information and connections you need.

You can ask it a question, or tell it something you care about. It takes anything—a complaint, a question, a proposal, or an opinion—and figures out what to do with it.

Why does State need my postcode?

We use the postcode to match you to a UK parliamentary constituency and route your contributions to the correct elected representatives. We store the constituency, not your full postcode. We don't use your postcode for anything else.

What does "Your Political Power" show me?

It's a summary of where you sit in the political system: your parliamentary constituency, your local ward, and the elected representatives at each level, including your MP, councillors, and mayor where applicable. It's there so you know exactly who you can hold to account.

How does "Recent Chats" work?

Every conversation you have with the Oracle is saved so you can come back to it. You can scroll your recent chats in the left sidebar.

If you don't want a chat saved, you can delete it from the chat itself. If you'd rather not save anything at all, you can turn off chat history in Settings, though this means you lose the ability to come back to past conversations.

Can I use State on behalf of someone else?

No. Each account is tied to an individual. If you run a campaign or organisation and want to coordinate constituents on State, share State Discussion with your supporters.

Do I need an account to read State?

You can read Discussion pages and theme pages without an account. To start or participate in a Discussion, or use the Oracle, you need to sign in.

This keeps the platform democratic: minimise bots, keep conversations real.

How is my data protected?

In short: we store the minimum we need, we don't sell anything, and we use industry-standard security, including encryption at rest and in transit, access controls, and regular audits.

The full details are in our Privacy Policy. If you have specific questions, email contact@state.com.

How do I delete my account?

Go to Profile, then Settings, then Delete Account. We delete your account data within 30 days. Discussion contributions you've published are deleted with the account; aggregate reaction counts may persist anonymously.

How do I get in touch?

In the app, go to Profile and choose Give Feedback. You can also email contact@state.com.

We aim to reply within five working days.
